Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday, August 19, 2008.

Florida continued to see strong thunderstorms, heavy rains and high winds as Tropical Storm Fay trekked northeastward today. Thus far there have been five tornado reports. The first sighting was in Miami-Dade county and had reported gusts of 36 knots/ 41 mph. The next tornado was reported in Martin county. Onlookers reported downed wires and an overturned a car. Two more tornadoes were spotted in St. Lucie and Glades counties with no damage reported. The fifth tornado was seen in Brevard county and caused damage to three manufactured housing structures. There were no injuries reported with this sighting. Northeast Florida remains under tornado, tropical storm, and flood watches.

Meanwhile, storms in the Northeast have been reported for high winds and hail. Strong winds have been reported in Plymouth and Barnstable counties in Massachusetts. Both counties have reported fallen trees due to strong winds. Barnstable county also reported two incidences of penny to quarter size hail. Eastern Massachusetts remains under severe thunderstorm warning.

In the Southern Plains, northeastern Texas and southern Oklahoma saw showers and isolated thunderstorms. The region was placed under flash flood watch due to continued showers.

To the west, states in the Northern and Central Great Basin were placed under a red flag warning as severe weather conditions were conducive for severe fires.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday have ranged from a morning low of 34 degrees at Bryce Canyon, Utah to a midday high of 100 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
